US Navy Single Fuze 15-inch Shell recovered near Charleston, S.C.
Shell body is in superb condition with only some minor pitting on the non-display side. Just below the fuze hole a block 'L' appears, possibly a mark of the USS Lehigh. The Lehigh was a turreted monitor, the only type of vessel the US Navy fitted with 15-inch smoothbores, that operated in South Carolina waters. A rare 1862 dated long naval fuze is original to this shell and is removeable.
