Classic Confederate Wood Drum Canteen complete with tooled leather sling w/roller buckle and wooden stopper.

Diameter is just under 7 1/4 inches; width is 2 1/4 inches. Both faces bear tooling marks from the lathe, including a sunburst pattern that appears in the center of both sides. Each side of the canteen has a straight line split. This is probably from expected shrinkage of the wood. Fortunately the wood is still tight with no visible gaps.

This example is constructed with iron bands and brass sling guides. All are original to this piece all having a wonderful dark, untouched patina, both iron and brass.

Tooled leather sling is complete but split near the stopper. These short leather slings are usually associated with canteens issued to Confederate cavalry units. Originally it would have been attached to the saddle with a snap swivel but the swivel is no longer present on this example.

Fortunately the entire length of the sling remains with the original iron roller buckle and leather guide. Leather has never been treated and remains in just as found condition, not flaky but somewhat dry and crazed but complete. At any rate an original sling is a huge and valuable plus for an original CS canteen.
